CD 3
Called my crap-ass doctor yesterday... (I have put off finding a new doctor... because it is so overwhelming) Anyway.... I need an annual exam and bloodwork to look at what the Metformin is doing to me (if anything). The first appt. they can give me is Sept. 1... sooo that would put me on cd 18. I feel a little weird about having a pelvic so close to possible conception (this month I "peaked" on cd 13.) I told the receptionist that I was trying to get pg and that date would be in the 2nd 1/2 of my cycle and she said "as long as you are not on your period it is fine." Does that sound right to you???? I am considering calling back and canceling. It just seems strange to "swab" the uterus at that time... what if he swabs something OUT???
Opinions?

I think that they only swab at your cervix for your pap, and there shouldn't be any embryos trying to implant there. I don't expect it would be a problem, but since the visit isn't emergent, do what makes you comfortable. The problem is that even with my regular cycles, I have a narrow window (a week or so) between when the bleeding stops and when I'm potentially ovulating. How hard is that going to be for you to nail down?
I'm with Alisa. During a regular pap they sample the cervix not the uterus. He will probably feel the uterus and ovaries to make sure they feel normal, but a potential pregnancy will be fine.
Also, as Alisa said, do what feels comfortable to you.
A lot of doctors do a pap during your first appointment after you find out you are pregnant. I know when they screened me for ureaplasma, which I ended up having, they did a cell culture of the cervix during the 2ww and I was really upset and worried about it. I think it is okay as long as they are not doing biopsies, etc. But like the others said, it has to be comfortable for you, so be a b----like I would and ask them to bring up the appointment. :-)
i think you will be ok with the exam. my RE likes to do a pap when i find out i'm pregnant already. at first i thought that was weird but he doesn't go all the way in "there".
It should be fine. Most OBs do a pap at your initial pregnancy appointment if you haven't had one done in the previous 6 months. Best of luck.
My DR did a pap at my first prenatal visit too - I wanted to kill him as it seemed totally unncessary and dangerous to me. Apparently standard practice though.
Ok - going against the norm here - 1. Yes, they only swab the cervix during a pap.
2. Yes, they normally do a Pap at the beginning of a pregnancy.
3. BUT - since my pregnancy was high risk (and I would assume yours would be because of your history) my doc opted to wait until after the first trimester.
4. The worrying about getting a Pap done is NOT going to help you.
I think that if you aren't comfortable, you should wait out the pap - if you are pregnant then you and your doc can decide the best time to do it.
That is just my two cents. Have a good one Jaime.
