You want me to put it where????

Just got my Progesterone blood work results and I am REALLY Low (2.4 on cd 16 - my RE wants to see 20)... This could be the reason for the 2 miscarriages... to bad it took 10 months and 2 m/c to get a doctor to run this frigging test!

Anyway... He prescribed 200 MG of ORAL Prometrium to be taken 2 times a day... VAGINALLY... Has anyone had a doctor prescribe the oral meds but tell you to take them vaginally? (I am nervous because I am not sure my vagina knows how to swallow...) My RE says he does it all the time because it goes exactly where they want it and faster... but why not do a cream? (Maybe this is less messy and stays in you better???) I guess I just stick one of the capsules up there tonight and go to bed... But I am a little worried about the morning ones... I don't want it to fall out (and I don't want to walk around all day with a clenched vag...) I think I am getting WAY to used to foreign things being stuck up there...

Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this method... or if my doctor is, indeed, insane.

Uhm... I have also heard about either very GOOD side effects... increase libido, losing weight, better moods... or very BAD side effects... Irritable, moody, and turning into a raging bitch (which I already am so to magnify that would be really dangerous...) So truthfully... what should I expect??? Do I need to warn Mr. D.???

We are finally actually doing some problem solving here... so that is exciting... To bad it took 10 months to get the fucking ball rolling....

I have done the progesterone suppositories so many times and its really no big deal. They dissolve super quick so you really put them in and go, no problems with them falling out.. sometimes you might see a little white residue is all. I didn't really notice any symptoms, well above and beyond all the fertility meds =)
One small thing I found later, my lab gave them to me and I had to put them in with my fingers, which I found kind of gross, but someone else mentioned their lab gave them an applicator. I found that much better for me, I ended up getting once for free from Freedom Drugs.

I have heard of doing this. Basically it just needs to dissovle (sp??) and pass into your blood stream across a membrane. Any place that has a lot of blood vessels will do. (You could probably have disolved it under you tongue but it would probably taste horrible and/or take forever.) Doing it this way will also cause the drug to get into your system faster than if you took it orally, and you'll probably end up getting more of it (won't be interfered (sp?) with by food/stomach acids, etc). Two things that I don't know are 1) if there's any particular reason that he would want the med to get into your system faster (although probably not) and 2) if there are any local effects that he thinks would be a good idea (also probably not).
(And just a disclaimer-I did NOT get an MD from the Google School of Medicine. I'm a nurse practitioner. But understand that my specialty is NOT infertility-what I gave you above is pretty non-specific stuff. My speciality is dialysis and kidney failure-trust me when I say that you do NOT want to need the info that I really know something about! :-) )

I'm glad you've finally got some answers regarding progesterone, but jeeez...10 months to get someone to run a prog test!! Gah. It blows my mind.

I'll be crossing my fingers and hoping like heck this is going to help and work wonders!!

I take 100mg of Prometrium vaginally every day. My RE's reasoning for this is that it is absorbed directly into the uterus in a greater concentration than if you were to take it orally. The only thing is that since it's absorbed directly into the uterus, any bloodwork you have done to check your progesterone will not reflect much of an increase in the level. That's because not much of it enters your bloodstream when you take it vaginally. Just remember that if your doc does another draw and the numbers don't increase much, if at all, that's probably why. (BTW, my RE checks progesterone 7 days after ovulation, when the level is at its highest--why did your doc do it on CD16--is that 7 days after you o'ed?)

As for the Prometrium, I put it in (with my finger, lucky me) just before going to bed and haven't had any problem with it coming out, etc. Like the other commenter, the only thing I have is some white discharge during the day, but not a lot and it usually comes out when I pee so I see it floating in the bowl (sorry for TMI). I wear a pantiliner just in case.

Good luck--it's really not bad at all!

Tell me about it, sister. I asked for this test several times after my miscarriage, especially after my suspected "chemical" pregnancies (+ hpt followed by a period). No one wanted to do it, I have no idea why they couldn't, even if it was just to make me feel better. Bastards.

I have a question though. Is it possible that low progesterone reflects poor ovulation? Did he say anything about that, or does anyone know? I too, wonder why he didn't want to test your levels at 7dpo. Maybe he thought, just in case you are pregnant now, he wanted to get a jump on it? Let's hope that was his thinking!
Glad you are doing something proactive.

Hey Jamie,

I'm on your exact regimen--2 progesterone 200 mg supps vaginally each day. Don't worry, they stay lodged up there quite well on their own--no clenching required! A bit of discharge from time to time, but nothing terrible.

One thing that I've heard is that sometimes your progesterone blood test comes back fine, but in actuality, the progesterone in your body isn't getting to your uterine lining. This circumvents that problem, without the joy of an endometrial biopsy.

It is weird, though, that your doc tested you when he did (especially if you haven't O'd yet, according to your ticker)--usually the 7 dpo test is when you'll know whether you produce enough or not. In any event, it can't hurt to take the supps, and if it helps keep the baby, even better!

As for side effects: none noticeable to me.

Good luck!

Hey Jamie..it's Erin AKA Erin and Joey (PW TTC board)....I didn't sign up for an account here yet but wanted to reply to so many posts...progesterone is what sustains a pregnancy in the first trimester before the placenta takes over. I, too had a lower level with my 1st pregnancy and took them for the whole 1st trimester with success. Now since carrying #2 I am on them again until 12 weeks. I had some early spotting (6 weeks) and was terrifed that I was m/c...so I think my progesterone supps saved the day. They are quite messy though I must say...I constantly feel 'wet' even with a liner. Levels of progesterone is also a big reason that women get the 'all day sickness' so that's the biggest side effect for me...constantly vomiting. But that's OK I wouldn't have it any other way...it's a daily reminder for me. I'm SO hoping this is your month..feel free to email me at erinkq@ameritech.net..I feel like we haven't chatted in forever!! Good luck!

I justed starting Prometrium 200mg intravaginally and was also quite traumatized by the thought of having to do this 2x/day. I didn't know about the applicators. I never tested low for progeterone. My Dr. prescribed it because my luteal phase is only 10 days long. Does anyone know if low progesterone would be the only cause of this? I'm just not sure this is really my problem. Btw, I haven't had any side effects at all (other than higher than usual bbt's). i think this is becuase of not taking it orally.

Hi, I just came across your blog when I was googling progesterone. i stared thaing it yesterday...talk about scary....2x day up there...I wasn't told anything about anything except to just do it...I don't even know if it's in far enough. I've had 3 m/c and hopefully this does the trick as I am prego again, but only 4 1/2 weeks....sometimes I feel all the prego symptoms, then I don't so basically i am freaking myself out hoping I keep this baby...AND that it is healthy...for my DR told me to do this, and it is what I am doing...thanks you for posting this on your blog...It sure eased my mind knowing that I am not the only person shoving oral drugs up my hoo hoo!

okay I just typed a comment and it was erased, so round two.
I too just came across your blog from Google and was prescribed 400 mg of Prometrium a day vaginally. Thought it was a little odd considering I'm also taking 600 mg orally of the same meds. I've done creams and such with IVF but never Promterium so I looked it up. But I'm right there with ya girl! Feel your pain, its never fun! But its keeping me pregnant at the moment after 3 m/c but even with 600 mg. of Prometrium, my progesterone is struggling. However I've heard you can't ever OD on the stuff, that your body will just use what it needs so I'm ready for the 1000mg if it keeps me pregnant. Plus I just did IVF (which failed, I'm pregnant naturally just months after the IVF, so weird and scary)and I was on 1200 mg of progesterone plus 2 PIO shots a day. Just wanted to let you know I feel your pain about the oral meds. Right there with ya. Good luck! Check out our blog at

The Wall Street Journal and others have recently reported about using viagra in women. This comes from a study in JAMA that found that in women who had experienced sexual dysfunction after taking an antidepressant like Prozac or Celexa, the 49 women who took Viagra compared to the 49 women who took placebo had an improvement in sexual function. http://www.besthealthmed.com/viagra_n_women.html

great site mrs. d! i took a hpt last night and it was positive....took another one this morning just to make sure i didn't hallucinate...positive again. so i immediately called the RMA peeps (i was supposed to start iui treatment this week after i got my period, but....surprise!) my obgyn prescribed prometrium which i will start after i get my blood work done tomorrow. here is the kicker.....my husband is away on a business trip until friday. i got through one phone call tonight without saying a word and it is KILLING ME! i want to be able to tell him we are knocked up in person so i can see his reaction and just be happy together. don't know if i can wait until friday when he comes home. in the meantime i have this HUGE secret that no one knows but me! on top of that i am scared i will miscarry again (i hear ya mrs. d....2 here myself) so i am trying not to get too excited, and at the same time feel grateful this is finally happening. big sigh.

btw... dr. lloyd what the bejesus does viagra have to do with this??

Anyone else that gets to do this wonderful chore – I found a cheat. If you've ever heard of "Pre-Seed" it is a "sperm-friendly" lubricant that I found, well it comes with these applicators that squeeze the stuff up – it's like a syringe with no needle and the top is just open. The Prometrium pill fits perfectly in the top and it's a lot easier to insert all the way – once its on the applicator, use that and just push the plunger up and wa-la, pill in!

thanks for this post and all the responses. i am 21w pregnant, and was just put on this med. my cervix was open at my last ultrasound!! i was not able to find the prescribed vaginal suppository and a pharmacist told me the oral medication was the same thing. so that is what i bought. i contacted my OB to confirm that it was okay to stick the oral med up there and he said it is fine. i found your post while i was googling prometrium. i too feel wet all the time. my friend was on this same med and she was told to lay down for an hour afterwards. i was only told to take it at bed time. here's hoping it works for all of us!!

I have had two miscarriages in the last 2 years I'm currently pregnant now and they put me on progesterone and when I was 7 weeks when I found out I am now 12 weeks and I just heard the baby's heartbeat and the doctor said the baby was constantly moving now they want to take me off at the progestrone at 14 weeks I have read that some women have miscarried after being taken off them at 14 weeks my question is how true is this and should I tell my doctor to keep me on them or should I just pray for the best after the 14 weeks

I just started a 200 mg 1/day regimen, and was told by the nurse at my doctor's office "if you have intercourse, insert the suppository afterward". Of course, it's always best to check with your own doc, as intercourse could be restricted with certain conditions anyway.

I laughed out loud reading this! I was questioning the same thing. My Doc said the oral pill may be taken vaginally as well (just before bed). I'll report back what it's like during the days :)

My parents never sent me to a gyno til i was 19. Im 29 now almost 30. They put me on bc for 9 yrs thought it would help w/ my extreme pain w/ pds. They said pain was all in my head that the bc would help to take midol id be fine. I just have bad pds. It took me 17 yrs & 6 drs later to convince drs this isnt normal i have endo. Same w/ my parents. Pain got so bad i wanted everything ripped out of me. Tired of believing what drs said & tired of being so sick i called my dad bitching about the pain after all these yrs of no one listening he tells me to have gyno send me to a specialist. Idk why they never thought of that when i was younger. So i pushed drs office until Finally was diagnosed w/ Endo. Via lap last yr. & my right tube blocked. I knew it all along.

Been off bc for 2 yrs roughly never got preg. Hubby & i have been seeing a fert. Specialist since this jan. Gone through 3 iui's first two were neg. The 3rd i havent done hcg bloodwork yet til next week. The first 2 mo they just did my bloodwork. I found out bloodwork indicated for the AMH level 0.45. They said for extremely fertile woman their a 4 or 5. They were hoping id be at least a 1 or a 2 like average fertile women. They said my ovarian reserve is really low for someone my age. They were surprised @ this & basically said in a nice way my reserve is shitty barely anything left. I looked online my reserve i guess is like that of a 49 yr old woman. All the labs they gave me show all levels & ages of what they should be & it said the same thing.

I was also told that i don't ovulate every mo either & im going through premenopause which exp. Why pds last 2 yrs are abnormal cycles no continuous flow it starts & stops & im bleading less than normal lately using more liners than pads. & more tiny drops or spotting than flow. Wish i woulda known sooner when i brought up to gyno 2 yrs ago pds changing etc. They didnt run tests check me out etc. nurse practitioner said it must be something new for your pd since your getting older.

1st iui progesterone was 23, motility 23% w/ 6.7 m sperm i think & we did frozen sample bc of hubbys wrk sch. No preg. The 2nd mo progesterone was 15.6, motility 45% & 19 m sperm once again frozen. The 3rd iui progesterone 15.4, 90% motility, 18.9 m sperm fresh this time. Dr. Just pres. Me progesterone 200 mg vaginally 3x a day. I just started last night. they said progesterone is a little low & borderline. They said i'm @ a risk of miscarriage & that i have to take it until they say otherwise. On a med. Cycle like im on they like your progesterone level to be 15.5 or higher they prefer higher. On non med i was told 10 to 15 i think if i remember correctly. Just wanted to throw my story out there & good luck to everyone just try to have a lil faith thats all we can do since we all cant control our situations im trying to be more pos about my disease & other issues & i hope you all do the same its hard our situations are sad & arent fair. Especially when you see your friends or coworkers preg & you wish that was you but instead of being sad im going to keep doing what they ask & hold my head up high maybe today isnt our day but hopefully someday soon itll be our turn

I just started taking progesterone vaginally 4 days ago. I take 200 mg at night. I have gotten some cramping and some spotting. I also have some headaches and constipation. I know this medicine can cause that but I am hoping it is implementation bleeding and signs that I am pregnant. My doctor's office is being vague saying it could be either! I am trying hard not to get my hopes up to high though!
