I don't believe it's the ice cream that's so bad for them, it's the fudge part! Dogs cannot have chocolate!

How funny that this comment came within minutes of my posting... and is anonymous... even after my plea at the bottom...

Let me asssure you all that Truman got very little of my precious hot fudge in my sundea... and (as many American's may be shocked to know) there is actually very little chocolate in most of the chocolate that we eat... and hot fudge actually contains very little real chocolate... it is mostly butter and sugar.

As a public service anoouncement I will include this info that I found... milk chocolate does not become toxic for dogs until they eat approximately 1 ounce per pound... so Truman would have to eat an entire hershey's bar before he is in danger... dark and baking chocolate is more toxic by a lot... so be very careful about that.

So, you do not have to panic if your pup steals a few of your m&m's.

This is also a great time to share a good hot fudge recipe....

INGREDIENTS
4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups white sugar
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk

DIRECTIONS
Fill the lower pot of a double boiler half way and bring to a boil. Melt chocolate, butter, and salt together in upper pot. Add the sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring after each addition.

Gradually add the evaporated milk, a little at a time and continue stirring until well mixed. Serve hot over ice cream. Extra sauce maybe stored in refrigerator and reheated in microwave.

This recipe makes about 5 cups of hot fudge... about 24 servings.

So Truman is fine after licking my spoon in the Sundae eating caper... not even a tummy ache.

No puppies were harmed in the making of these pictures...

Our cat loves all things dairy. It's our daily ritual that he gets to lick my cereal bowl when I'm done. He begs for ice cream and gets his little face stuck in yogurt containers. Quite hilarious!

I give my dogs ice cream all the time...they love vanilla! One time on a routine trip to DQ (in the drive thru) they actually gave my Sonny his own free cup...he was in heaven.

When I was in college every time I came home I would take our dog out for ice cream. I would buy him his own cone and hold it for him while he ate it. He would get so excited when he saw me come home. He knew it was ice cream time :)

Thanks for writting.

Omg, how could anyone resist giving just a little to him.. Ok, now this may also start a war against dogs and chocolate but I would gve my Dad's dog tiny chocolate eggs at Easter and it did not effect him. It's when it's given regularly as it builds up in the system that does the damage. So anyone wanna fight? JOKING, just joking...
BUT I can hear the keyboard keys as everyone furiously debates what I just said. One off's and every now and then is not too bad...
Luv ya Jamie...
